Beautiful Beer on ITV’s This Morning! Woohoo!

This Morning Beer Selection - May 2012

Beer got another look-in on the telly today when I was invited into the ITV1 studios of the This Morning programme today. I had a fabulous time with Phillip and Holly about my mission to spread the word about the beauty in beer to women and to anyone else who’s interested!!

I know there are tons of men who read this blog too so I’m not ignoring you either, boys! But you know how I feel about getting more women interested in beer and I know many of you boys are on board with the mission too!! CHEERS!

So I showed off the following FIVE fabulous beers which are among my (many) personal faves and I’m sure which you’ll all have your own opinions on (cos we beer bloggers aren’t half vocal, eh?!?) Plus we chatted about matching beer to food, and how exciting it is to have a go and I gave some tips on how viewers can start their own beer adventures. What’s so exciting is it just goes to show how much the image of beer is changing and that mainstream telly is really getting switched on more by beer. In my eyes beer ISN’T just a man’s drink. It can be fun, it can be elegant, it can be chic, it can be glamorous! It can be all these things and more!




This Morning Beer Selection – May 2012

Loddon Brewery’s Ferryman’s Gold – 4.8%

A delicious golden ale in the very attractive newly branded bottle. Loddon is based in Dunsden Green in Oxfordshire and have just celebrated 10 successful years in business. So what better way to party than with a lush new website and branding. It looks like cool, dynamic and exciting. Who wouldn’t love their dragonfly logo? You can tell the team are a fun bunch because they’ve done what not many micrbreweries have dared (or can afford) to  do: add some exciting video clips to their website. So if even if you never get the chance to visit the brewery, then by the time you’ve watched all the clips and outtakes of the brewery tour,  you feel as if you know them! Well done, guys! Ferryman’s is an extraordinary beer with lemons and limes on the nose: that smell comes from the hops in the beer called Styrian goldings (from Slovenia), a beautiful honey sweet offering with a smooth, creamy feel in the your mouth which made me shimmy around the living room when I tasted it. That full-bodied nature comes from the mix of cara and wheat malt in the beer.  It’s on draught (4.4% in Oxfordshire pubs) and in bottles in supermarkets like Tesco’s, Asda, Sainsbury’s and you can order it direct from them online (worth doing!)

Durham Brewery’s Temptation – Imperial Stout – 10% ABV

Durham are so cool. I really like what they do in terms of reaching out to drinkers about what they’re up and they’ve really embraced the Twittersphere where us many of us beer bloggers like to live. Only the other week they held an #impoff: a tweetfest for anyone and everyone to open an Imperial Stout they’ve been harbouring in their beer cupboard for however long, for them to open it and tell everyone else what it was like using the hash tag. A brilliant celebration of the beer style which was a hit back in the 1700s in Britain, which was shipped out to Catherine, Queen of Russia cos she was a MASSIVE fan of it!

So Durham’s Temptation is a knock-out – in every sense of the word, the taste explosion it gives you in the mouth is indicative of the sheer wonder of beer. I get deep, dark chocolate notes, plus liquorice and some coffee. Almost a port-like quality, matured at length to deepen the flavour. It’s a bottle-conditioned beer (meaning some of the yeast is left in the bottle to help develop its flavour even more so by the time you open it you get a real treat!!) Note of caution:  you don’t HAVE to drink the sediment so make sure you stand the bottle for a while before you open, then pour it gently on a tilted angle so you leave the yeast at the bottom of the bottle :-)



Bosteel’s Deus – Champagne beer – 11.5% 

I lurrrrrrrrrrrrrve this beer, it’s my Christmas Day beer, my celebration beer, my Very Special Occasion Beer – a look of champagne about it with a lush whiff of apples, pears, peaches on the nose. They keep the hop ingredients quiet but none of the beers the Bosteels brewery in Belgium makes are overly bitter. It was made in the champagne style: it goes through the bottle turning process called “remuage” and the yeast is removed too (“degorgement”). All in all it takes more than a year! I love the way it’s so versatile as a beer, as it tastes pretty good with most things I’ve had with it – from the sweetest dessert to the spiciest of meals. And of course it HAD to be served in a champagne flute. Nothing else would do!

Nogne-O’s India Pale Ale   – 7.5% ABV

This is a fantastic beer brewed by Kjetil and his team from Norway – I met him the other month and had a chat. So check out my interview with him, he’s a fascinating man who cares about beer and – like tons of other breweries around the world is influenced by British beer styles. India Pale Ale is the style of beer that was popular in the 1700s. It was a beer favoured very much by the gentry of the time, and which was shipped off to India, endured very well on the long, hot boat journey and tasted even better there when it got there than here! So this beer has a really pronounced bitterness, coupled with a delicious sweetness. Works incredibly well with spicy food dishes in that the spice and bitterness in the beer compliments and enhances the flavours of both the food and the beer.



Nogne-O IPA – 7.5%



Maisel’s Weisse – 5.2% ABV

This was a bit of a star at my FemAle event in March – brewed  in Bayreuth in Northern Bavaria it’s brewed to Germany’s strict Reinheitgebot laws dating back to 1516. Only water, malted barley, hops and yeast go into this beer. You get bananas, cloves, coriander spice from the brew alongside a lovely sweetness, that doesn’t over power, dry in the mouth as it finishes.

Plus I made a Beer Mojito too! A bit like my Mad Mojito wWith guys from The Apprentice – substituting the soda water you usually get in a mojito with a light golden ale, that time it was PUrity Mad Goose. On This Morning we tried it out with Ferryman’s Gold – you’ll have to watch the clip to see how everything went down.

So most of the beers are available from specialist beer shops – lots of them are online (see my BLOGROLL for the ones I had time to add!), so ask a beer-loving friend if you’re not sure or GOOGLE where to go.  Or specialist/craft  beer bars! The good thing is that places like these ARE growing in numbers so if you search online you’ll be able to find them. Also beers like Ferryman’s are available on draught in pubs around Oxfordshire. So do remember to support your local pub and buy good beer from there cos many are still going out of business because of the crazy beer escalator: the way the Government taxes beer which means it costs more!

Please sign the petition to save British pubs, and say NO to the Beer Duty Escalator. Over 40,000 people have signed so far but we need SO MANY MORE SIGNATURES!!!!!!!!!!

  2. Good article and well done getting the TV exposure. We really don’t get to see enough about beer on TV but the ones you’ve described here sound right up my street although I’d have to be a bit cautious with the 11.5% of the Bosteel’s Deus – sounds amazing though. Thanks
